Lot Size Calculator for USD/JPY
The yen breaks two forex habits: the pip is 0.01, not 0.0001, and it’s worth yen, not dollars. The calculator comes with both already handled, plus the typical stop channels set on USD/JPY.
How you trade
Lot size to risk 1% ($10.00) with a stop of 40.3 pips:
0.03 lots
If the stop gets hit you lose $7.69: 0.8% of the account.
Exact lot: 0.039 · one pip is worth $6.36 per lot
Contract size and pip value
One lot of USDJPY is 100,000 units, and a pip is a move of 0.01 in the price. With a full lot, each pip is worth $6.36. USDJPY is quoted in JPY: a pip is worth 1,000 JPY per lot, which with USD/JPY at 157.188 comes to about $6.36. The calculator loads that price; change it to today’s.
| Lot | One pip | Typical stop (40.3 pips) |
|---|---|---|
| 0.01 | $0.06 | $2.56 |
| 0.1 | $0.64 | $25.64 |
| 1 | $6.36 | $256.38 |
A worked example, step by step
Say you buy USDJPY at 157.000 with the channels’ typical stop, 40.3 pips below, at 156.597. Your account is $2,000 and you want to risk 1%.
- What you’re risking: $2,000 × 1% = $20.
- The distance to the stop: 157.000 − 156.597 = 0.403 of price = 40.3 pips.
- What one pip is worth on a full lot: $6.36.
- The lot size: 20 ÷ (40.3 × 6.36) = 0.078, which rounded down is 0.07 lots. If the stop gets hit, you lose $17.95.
How wide channels really set their stops on USD/JPY
We measured 92 USDJPY signals posted in 9 Telegram channels, from December 2021 to October 2026. This is the distance between the entry and the stop they set:
| Stop | Distance | In price | Lot ($1,000 at 1%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tight (25th percentile) | 29 pips | 0.290 | 0.05 |
| Typical (median) | 40.3 pips | 0.403 | 0.03 |
| Wide (75th percentile) | 73 pips | 0.730 | 0.02 |
Half of the signals put the stop between 29 and 73 pips; one in four, closer than 29. A tighter stop than that is unusual on USDJPY, and a wider one calls for a smaller lot for the same risk.
Each signal counts once, even if we read it in several audits of the same channel. Aggregate figures only: no channel is named. Snapshot as of October 7, 2026. How we measure.
Frequently asked questions
How much is a USD/JPY pip worth?
A pip is 0.01 yen of price; on a 100,000 USD lot, 1,000 JPY. In dollars, 1,000 ÷ 157.188 = $6.36 per lot, and $0.06 on 0.01 lots.
Why is a yen pip 0.01?
Because the yen is quoted with two decimals, not four: one yen is worth far less than a dollar, and the fourth decimal would be a negligible move. The third decimal many platforms show is a tenth of a pip.
What lot size should I use on USD/JPY with $1,000?
Risking 1% ($10) with the channels’ typical stop, 40.3 pips: 10 ÷ (40.3 × 6.36) = 0.039, which rounded down is 0.03 lots. If the stop gets hit, you lose $7.69. With a different stop, change the distance in the calculator.
Limits
The math is done in dollars; the calculator converts it to your currency at the rate you enter. The stop figures describe what channels post, not what’s right for you. This isn’t advice: it’s arithmetic, so your position size isn’t a guess.
Hypothetical or simulated performance results have certain limitations. Unlike an actual performance record, simulated results do not represent actual trading. No representation is being made that any account will or is likely to achieve profits or losses similar to those shown.
